What to Do This Weekend: The Cinema, Water Parks, and local hangouts!

Thursday, August 1st

The Gwangju Cinema is the oldest movie theater in the city. If you’re a fan of independent, foreign, and classic movies, then you need to check it out! They also host retrospectives from some of the world’s most talented directors. Currently playing right now is Everybody Knows, starring Javier Bardem, and Penelope Cruz. There is also a documentary about famed opera singer Maria Callas, and an experimental film starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. Friday, August 2nd

Are you a fan of the reality competition The Amazing Race? Did you know that Gwangju is holding its own version sponsored by GFN? Next Friday, August 9th will be the latest in the series of GFN’s Amazing Races. It will take place downtown, and will mix history, culture, and fun all in one night. Get together a team of friends (max. 4) and take part in this great event. Space for teams are limited, so if you’re interested follow this link to JD’s column on the blog.

All right Gwangju it’s August so you know it’s going to be a scorcher-even at night. What can you do? Head in to the air conditioned coolness of Tequilaz for their Friday night specials. Treat yourself to some of their delicious tacos which are only 3,000 won. They have unlimited draft beers for only 15,000 won that you can pair up those tacos with. If you’re not a fan of beer, than you can get unlimited rail cocktails for only 20,000 won. All specials run from 9:00 p.m., until midnight, and are cash only please. If you’re looking for a nice place to cool off with your kids, the city of Gwangju has you covered. The city’s water parks are open, and many of them run until mid-August. There are four locations in the city, including one conveniently located at the ACC! For all the details you need, please follow this link to an article here on the blog. You don’t have to pay big prices, or fight the big lines to enjoy some cool fun this summer!

Let’s face it citizens of Gwangju, you don’t really need a reason to head to Speakeasy on Saturday night. Most of your friends are going to be there already because of the drink specials, the friendly staff, the upstairs pool table, and the variety of sports they have showing on TV. If you think you have the guts, take part in their t-shirt challenge. Finish all seven beers that they have on draft in under 90 minutes, and receive a free Speakeasy t-shirt, and your picture on the wall of fame.
