What to Do This Weekend: Swap, Don’t Shop, Old School Classics, and the Design Biennale

Hello Gwangju!

September means back to work for many of us, but it also means most activities are done with their summer breaks. Let’s see what’s happening in our city.

Thursday, September 5th

Let’s face it, during the summer our brains go a little soft. Well folks, it’s time to sharpen up with Quiz Night! Come on down this Thursday night to Speakeasy for questions, answers, and fun. Get together a group of your friends (max. 5), and tackle six rounds covering everything from current events to music. Don’t have a group? No worries, you can always find one to join. It only costs 5,000 won to play, and you have a chance to win some cash. The second place team will get their money back, and first place will win the rest. Quiz master Nate will be bringing the knowledge, so come out tonight for trivia! It all begins at 10:00 p.m., and if you need more details, then please go to their Facebook page.

Live at Loft is back tonight, and that means it’s a chance to listen to some of the great local talent that we have in Gwangju. Scheduled performances will begin at 9:00 p.m., and once they’re over an open mic will be set up for anyone looking to play. If you need more info, please check out their Facebook event page.

Friday, September 6th

Summer may be in its last days, but the Friday night specials at Tequilaz keeps going! Enjoy some of their tasty tacos for only 3,000 won each. Everyone knows tacos go better with beer, and they have unlimited drafts for 15,000 won. If you’re not a fan of the suds, then you’ll enjoy unlimited rail cocktails for only 20,000 won. These specials run from 9:00 p.m., until midnight, and are cash only please. For more information, please go to their Facebook page. Also, make sure you drop on by at some point on Saturday to wish bartender Stel a happy birthday!

The fall semester has begun, so it must be time for another Swap, Don’t Shop. This is one of the most popular events in Gwangju, and it’s easy to see why. Gently used clothes, shoes, appliances, books, and many other items will be available. For a small fee you will get a bag, and then you can fill it up with what you need. Also, if you have something to donate, you still have until Friday to drop it off. Swap, Don’t Shop will take place at the GIC from 3:00 p.m., until 5:00 p.m. My advice is to get there early and don’t miss out on anything. If you need any other details, please check out the Facebook event page.

The best R&B, Soul, and Hip Hop of the last 50 years will be playing this Saturday night at Speakeasy. You can expect everything from Stevie Wonder, to Lil Nas X being played. Now if that isn’t an eclectic mix, I don’t know what is! You can also expect some great drink specials, because, after all this is Speakeasy. It will all begin at 11:00 p.m., so come and down and enjoy great music, and drinks to cap off your weekend. If you need any more info, please go to their Facebook page.
