For the the first time this year, the summit of Mudeung Mountain will open to the public this Saturday.
According to Gwangju city officials, the peak of the City’s most famous mountain will be open to hikers from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Identity cards are a necessity for all those heading there as it is located inside a Korean military base.
At the summit, various performances and events are going to be held to celebrate the designation of the Mountain as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the third Korean site to be awarded the title.
The designated geopark area covers a total area of more than 1,051 square meters, including Gwangju and the counties of Damyang and Hwasun in South Jeolla Province. Those on Mudeung include the columnar joints such as “Seoseokdae” and “Ipseokdae”.
The peak has only opened 21 times since 2011, welcoming over 407,000 people to date.
