Prime Minister Lee Nak Yon said last week that he will wait for North Korea to reply to an invitation to the 2019 Gwangju World Aquatics Championship.
The remarks came during an international sporting event support committee meeting held at Seoul’s government headquarters.
PM Lee explained that Sports Minister Do Jong Hwan delivered the formal invitation to his North Korean counterpart in Lausanne, Switzerland last week when they met to discuss the proposed 2020 joint Olympic participation.
The Prime Minister said he expects North Korean athletes to take part in this year’s Swimming Championships as the competition will hand out 43% of the total slots for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in aquatics related fields.
During the meeting, PM Lee highlighted that the championship set to take place in Gwangju in July will also make South Korea the 4th country in the world to have hosted all 5 major international sports events following Germany, Italy and Japan and urged the attendees to work together to hold the event successfully.
