What to Do This Weekend: Open Mic, A Fundraiser, and Temper, Temper

Hello Gwangju!

It’s April Fool’s Day on Saturday, but you won’t find any tricks here! Let’s see what you can do this weekend in Gwangju.

Former Gwangju resident Jimmy C. is back in town for a visit, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than a trivia night in his honor! Get a group of four together and compete for cash and other prizes tonight at Speakeasy. All it costs is 5,000 won per person to enter. The second place team will earn their money back, and the first place team will take the rest of the pot! Trivia night is a great way to test your knowledge, and get an early start to the weekend. It all begins at 10 p.m. with quizmaster Sarah, and the Speakeasy staff. For more details, please go to their Facebook page.

Friday, March 31st

If you want to hear great live, local music, then Loft 28’s Open Mic Night is your top destination. If you want to perform for the local crowd, just bring your own instrument and Loft will take care of the rest. While you’re there be sure to check out the menu-with all items made on site! Open Mic begins at 10 p.m., and if you need more information then go to their Facebook page.

Usually the Saturday art class is held at the GIC, but today it will be another special online class. You can create art, and stay in your pajamas! Later on in the month there will be figure drawing classes as well. The Gwangju Art Class is also looking for volunteer teachers to lead class. If you’re interested in helping out, or just want to find out more information about today’s online session, then please go to their Facebook page.

The Gwangju Bombers want your support! The Bombers are a team made up of international and Korean players. They started their season in March and they encourage people to come and watch them play. If you want to cheer for your local team, then contact: sprouleinkorea@gmail.com.

For the past six years now many talented women have put on a performance of The Vagina Monologues to help raise money for women’s charities. This year’s performance won’t be until the end of April, but they will be having a fundraiser this weekend to kick things off. It will be held at the Dreamer’s Space at the Daein Market, and it all begins at 6:30. They’ll have live music, drinks and goodies for sale, and tickets for this year’s performance of TVM will be available. It’s a fantastic way to raise money for a great cause, and you know you’ll be entertained. For more details about the fundraiser, please check out their Facebook event page.

There are two great ways to end your Saturday this weekend. First off, Loft 28 is having a back to the 80’s + 90’s party. There is no cover, and if your group of three or more people dress up in their 80’s and 90’s finest, you’ll get a free bottle! You’ll be able to dance to all your favorite old school dance songs, and enjoy great drinks as well. The party begins at 11 p.m., so make sure your Delorean is operational! If you saw the band Temper, Temper awhile back here, then you know what a great set they did. You didn’t get a chance to see them?? That’s OK, because they’ll be back at Speakeasy tonight. The band starts playing at 10:30, and yes, they’ll be drink specials all night long. For more info, please go to the Facebook event page here.

More great live music coming in the next couple of weeks! Have a great weekend Gwangju!
