Happy Lunar New Year Gwangju! It’s a holiday weekend so let’s see what’s going on in our city.
Friday, February 15th
Don’t worry about your favorite hang out being closed during the holidays because many of them will be open. Tequilaz will have its usual business hours, and of course that means their great Friday specials. Unlimited draft beer for only 12,000 won (cash only), and unlimited rail cocktails for 20,000 won (again, cash only) will be available from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. The good times will continue after with karaoke until 2:00 a.m. Celebrate Seollal the Gwangju way-with some tasty Mexican food, and great drinks at Tequilaz! For more details, please go to their Facebook page.
Loft 28 will also be open for their weekly open mic night show. If you want to perform for the people of Gwangju just bring your instrument and everything else will be taken care of. All performers will receive one free drink. Open mic begins at 11:00 p.m., but don’t wait that long to go. They have a great menu, including many Jamaican inspired dishes. Also on Saturday night Loft will be having another one of their popular house parties. For info about both events, please check out their Facebook page here.
Saturday, February 16th
If you’ve never been to the ACC downtown, then the holiday weekend is the perfect time to check it out. You only have about one more month to check out acclaimed artist Tomas Saraceno’s exhibit Interplanetary Bodies. There’s also an interesting exhibition on the tattoo culture of Asia. You can also bring the kids to the ACC because they have a great children’s center. To find out when they’re open during the weekend, as well as details about the many different exhibits, please click on this link for the ACC website.
For many people holidays mean going to the movies, and a big one is opening up here this weekend. Black Panther arrives in theaters this Seollal, and it is guaranteed to be a big blockbuster. Even if you’re not a fan of comic book movies, you should still check it out for the awesome action sequence shot in Busan! Film fans are also in for a big treat this weekend because the 1982 sci-fi cult classic Blade Runner is being rereleased in theaters. If you’re like me, and have never had a chance to see it on the big screen, then you got to head out to the cinema this weekend. For times and locations of these films and more, please go to cineinkorea.com.
Free jello shots?? I think I have your attention! You don’t really need a reason to go to Speakeasy because most of Gwangju knows what a great place it is. Still, if you ever did need one, free shots is always a good one! There’ll be great music, and fantastic drinks from the friendly and helpful staff. Don’t forget that Friday night is there ever popular Name That Tune. It’s free to play, and you could win free drinks! For info about both events, please go to their Facebook page.
Have a great holiday Gwangju, and keep enjoying the Olympic coverage!
